Long time no blog. How are you all doing? It’s been a while since I have not posted a blog on here and there is a lot to catch up on.
Whoosh, where do we start?
Ok Let’s start off with the case of Mohbad and then proceed from there.
Who Is Mohbad?
Mohbad was a Nigerian rapper, singer, and songwriter from Ogun State, Born and raised in Ikorodu, Lagos. His real name is Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba. He started his music career in 2019. He is a talented vocalist who performs in the genres of street pop and hip-hop. He is well-known for his Yoruba-English mash-up singing and rapping. Mohbad has released several hit singles, including “Komajensun” and “Oja Daddy”. He gained immense popularity in 2020 after releasing his hit song Ko Por Ke (KPK) featuring Rexxie. He has also released other songs, such as Balan Zia Gar, Backside, and Feel Good.
Mohbad was formerly signed to Naira Marley’s Marlian Records Label before departing from the label in 2022 to form his own records label called “Imolenization”
Though his music was popular but majority of Nigerian did not know he is the original face and artist behind the music that made waves until his death.
Death of Mohbad
On September 12th, 2023, Mohbad died at the age of 27 after being treated for an unknown infection. He was buried immediately in an unbefitting manner compared to his personality. The casket used for the initial burial barely fitted his body size that they had to bend his neck to fit him in. People were confused as to why the rush to bury him in that manner especially after realizing that he was not a Muslim. His death led to an outpouring of grief among his fans and Nigerians at large protesting , demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Stories and videos of his escapades with his former record label boss Naira Marley and another man named Sam Larry whom was said to be friends with Naira Marley filled the internet over allegedly bullying and assaulting of Mohbad over time including video of him talking about the substance NDLEA gave him to drink. No one was sure what to believe as the cause of his death which was the main reason why further investigation was been demanded by the public and his fans.
Many videos surfaced online where he was calling out his former boss Naira Marley including other videos too relating to Sam Larry. These where backed-up with tweets by his close friend Bella Shmurda about his lamentations following his situation with his former boss. But above all these, the most one that tied everything that was causing unrest following his death is the out cries in the whole of his lyrics that people never paid attention to, to recognize that he was crying for help.
Investigation on Mohbad’s death
Days after his death, with the unrest across Nigeria and overseas by his fans. His body was exhumed for autopsy and further investigation into the cause of death. All the perpetrators allegedly mentioned to have contributed to his death were wanted in for justice.
Many celebrities supported the protest for justice for the singer and a more befitting burial including Davido, Tonto Dike, Iyabo Ojo and others. A Go fund me was created to support the family Mohbad left behind, his wife and his newly born baby.
Naira Marley and Sam Larry were later taken in by the police for questioning. Before this, Naira Marley released a video conversation with himself and the late singer, Mohbad of which the conversation presents Mohbad as someone that is undergoing some mental health issues. Afterwards, he also granted an interview to a politician known as Reno Omokri before he went into police custody.
The shocking thing about this arrest is that the police did not refer to them as suspect but rather referred to them as team members helping to find the suspect. As confused as the masses were, they were still hoping and trusting the police to deliver justice.
Interim Investigation report and Arrest
Following the Nigerian commissioner of police, Idowu Owohunwa’s press brief on the 6th of October 2023, A full investigation report so far was read. A total of five arrests was made following Mohbad’s case.
Miss Feyisayo Ogedembge, an auxiliary nurse brought in by Mohbad’s friend Ayobami Sadiq to treat Mohbad following an injury sustained at a concert on the 10th of September 2023 admitted that the treatment she administered to the deceased played a role to the deceased death which includes injections such as doses of tetanus oxide, intravenous paracetamol and intravenous tetrazole injection which immediately triggered reactions such as vomiting, goose bumps and convulsion, followed by death of the deceased. This made her the principal suspect.
Ayobami Sadiq Mohbad’s friend is an accomplice for hiring an auxiliary nurse to treat Mohbad, Oluwatosin Owoduni (Prime boy) is a suspect following the fight he had with the singer on the 10th of September 2023 that led to the severe injury sustained by the singer. Finally,
Sam Larry and Naira Marley were arrested as accomplices following the viral videos online for bully and assaults on the singer. Click for full press brief video. Investigation is still ongoing.
